Poudrecacher Favorite - Gravity Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cacheman48: The time for me to archive the “Poudrecacher Favorite” series has come. Growing demands of a family medical situation is making it more difficult to get out and maintain my caches. Poudrecacher published his “Nature Bats’ Last” series of unique and innovative caches between 2009 and 2013. I republished 10 of his favorite caches in December 2014 to keep the hides along the Poudre River and one at Hudson Lake available to cachers. The caches (and perhaps even more importantly the narrative in the cache descriptions) were refreshing and informational. That drove me to want to keep the caches going for nearly another six years. My desire was to archive the series on the anniversary of their placement, but needing to archive “Horse Pasture Pond” now is the time to retire the remaining caches in the series. I thank Poudrecacher for the great caches he designed and to all who were able to hunt the caches. Cache on!

Geocache Description:

CONGRATULATIONS TO MOOSETAG FOR BEING FIRST TO FIND!!!

Poudrecacher , a geocacher who lives in the Poudre Canyon,  placed a series of unique and innovative caches in and around the Poudre River Canyon.  His “Nature Bats Last” series was a delight featuring varied and challenging hides.  They became the favorite of many who geocached the Poudre Canyon.  There comes a time when maintaining caches become physically challenging and Mother Nature says it is time to move on.  This was the case with Poudrecacher, who with great remorse, had to archive many of his caches.  So as to not lose these very special caches, ten of them are being re-born in a new series called “Poudrecacher Favorite”.  This will allow these innovative caches to live on for the geocaching community to enjoy.  Thanks Poudrecacher for allowing the rebirth of your caches and for the enjoyment you have given to geocachers seeking your caches!

Description from the original cache page:

Head west from Ted's Place 6.1 miles and carefully pull over to the left and park near the chainlink fence. High ridges around here, so waypoints may dance around.

There's this lil' ol' 8'x8' concrete-lined tunnel that was built in 1952 and is part of the Colorado-Big Thompson water project that diverts water from the western slope over to the eastern slope, since 80% of the people in Colorado live on the eastern slope, that has fascinated me for years. This tunnel is actually the beginning of the 'Munroe Gravity Canal'. This 12.6 mile water trade mechanism consists of 4 tunnels, 7 siphons, 4 spillways for controlled overflows, and can move 250 cfs (cubic feet a second) of water via gravity flow the entire length of the canal. Water trade mechanism? Surprisingly, this 'North Poudre Diversion Structure' doesn't take any C-BT water out of the Poudre River. Instead, it takes other peoples' water and replaces it with water out of Horsetooth Reservior at the mouth of the canyon which is C-BT water...hence the phrase 'water trade mechanism'.

Once you find the cache container, look across the highway and you'll see the North Poudre Diversion Structure. At this spot, the water is diverted under the Poudre Canyon road and into the tunnel. Bring a pen...log only cache. Thanks and have fun!

STEEP CANYON WALLS HERE...COORDINATES AREN'T ACCURATE. PARK IN THE PULLOVER, THE CACHE IS HIDDEN IN THE ROCK WALL BELOW THE TREE. HAVE FUN!
