Geocache Description:

Hertfordshire is a great playground for us cachers with its rolling green hills and woodlands. When you get a go from geochecker it will have coords of where to park but please note although this area is generally quiet it is used as a cut through during rush hours please take care.Note for BBH cachers, I would really like to see one of these caches for Beds and Bucks so if you would like to get involved just give us a shout or go ahead and set one up. Happy caching.

Hertfordshire was founded in the Norse-Saxon Wars of the 9th century and developed through commerce serving London. Hertfordshire today is steeped in historical character but its industry and commerce has change radically from origins in brewing and paper making through to aircraft manufacture. The county has developed a wide range of industry where pharmaceuticals, financial services and film making are prominent.

People have occupied Hertfordshire for more than 350,000 years before Britain was even an island ranging from Norse-Saxons to Romans not to mention being owned by various Royals, but the Hertfordshire we know today is made up of 10 districts formed under the local government act 1972 and boasts a whopping 1,119,800 residents. And Hertfordshire is also a great "place" for "spotting" animals from deer in Ashridge to Parakeets in Shenley as i discovered just myself the other day.

Letchworth and Welwyn Garden Citys were central to the developement of town planning and this proved to be useful for the new towns act 1946, Stevenage being the first followed by Welwyn, Letchworth, Hatfield and Hemel Hempstead.

The character of Hertfordshire changed in the later part of the 20th century. At the start of the 20th century, 83% of workers worked in agriculture but by the end of it only 1% worked in this industry. Only one original brewery remains open despite our origins beginning with brewing. Nowadays Hertfordshire has become a service HQ for several important companies and a great hub for London commuters but thankfully it remains beautiful and charming with many reminders of how Hertfordshire became what it is today.
