This information describes the structure of this outcrop of rock. As most of the local rock, this is a limestone outcrop. This geocache is sited at the bottom of the rock face. Age of the rocks exposed: Arundian Age to Holkerian Age.

Description of what you can see: Dark to medium light grey, thick to thin-bedded, bioclastic limestone with mudstone beds.

Description of Lower Boundary: At the base you can see evidence of dark grey limestones with mudstone partings of the Scaleber Force Limestone Member where it rests sharply and conformably on paler grainstone of the Chapel House Limestone Formation.

Description of Upper Boundary: At the upward passage, if you stand back from the rock face, you can see the change from mid dark-grey limestone of the Scalebar Quarry Limestone Member into the pale grey limestone of the Cove Limestone Member and Malham Formation.

Thickness of the formation: Up to 224m in the south of the Middle Craven Fault. (you can’t see this because it’s below ground).

At this location the Formation thins rapidly northwards to ??m in the Kilnsey area.

Geographical Limits: Series of rock in the southern part of the Askrigg Block, North Yorkshire, including Kilnsey, Langcliffe and Austwick.

The origin of this formation, is Great Scar Limestone Group which was previous called Kilnsey Limestone

This sections extends from, Kilnsey Crag, Nr. Malham, North Yorkshire to Scaleber Force Limestone Member and Scaleber Quarry Limestone. Part of this section, Kilnsey Crag near Malham, North Yorkshire exposes 8m of the upper part of the Scaleber Force Limestone Member and 29m of the overlying Scaleber Quarry Limestone .
