I am happy to be off for Christmas break from December 20th to January 4th, so what better way to enjoy time off in winter but to go skating!!
It has been a long time since I have skated on the pond and channels of Bowness Park, so I figured it was time for a return!
Also, I heard some rumblings about people needing a Tuesday event, so why not put it on what will end up being my 650th day in a row!
So bring your skates to enjoy the pond and the channels, a travel mug to warm up with some hot chocolate (I'll be bringing it!), and dress for the weather! It is a covered area that has lots of picnic tables and even a large firepit, so if you want to bring some firewood for a fire (maybe to roast some marshmallows over) please feel free.
We will gather at Picnic Area 2, but as Bowness Park suffered significant damage during the flood last year, I was unable to officially book it - the lady at the City said Parks hasn't opened it up to bookings just yet. It IS open to walk-in traffic (whatever that means) so it might end up that we share the area with others, but on Sunday, it was pretty empty in the park. The Picnic Area is about 80 m north of the nearest access to skating on the channels. I was going to host it at the main access to the big pond, but I figured if anywhere would be full of people, that would be it, so I picked somewhere a little more out of the way in the hopes that we would be by ourselves.
The area around Picnic Area 2 is clear and a short walk from parking, so it should be crutches-accessible.
It is a dog-friendly area, but if you choose to bring your pooch, please ensure they will be comfortable around all the people (big and small) and ON leash, as it is not an off-leash area.
Please be VERY careful walking through the parking lot though; I was there on Sunday and it was QUITE icy! (No more broken Ants or broken Wings!!)
I plan to be out at Picnic Area 2 in Bowness Park for 1:00pm - 3:30pm no matter what the weather (like I said, it's a covered picnic area) and would love some company!!
