Knute Nelson is one of the most well-known citizens of Alexandria. He was born in Voss, Norway in 1843 and emigrated to the United States with his mother, Ingeborg, in 1849. As a young man, he served as a private and noncommissioned officer with the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army during the Civil War. After moving to Alexandria, he served numerous positions:

Minnesota State Senator
Presidential elector on the Republican ticket
Member of the board of regents of the University of Minnesota
Governor of Minnesota
United States Senator
Knute Nelson Care Center was established on his bequest in 1948.
