Geocache Description:

Caching is a passion, obession and just a flat out excuse to go see new places or see old places in new way. I cover a lot of areas as a housekeeper and for HNY-15 a wanted to highlight a few.


Around the early 20th century, Keego Harbor was a resort town for wealthy Detroiters who purchased cottages because of the city's natural beauty. The name "Keego" is said to mean "Big Fish" in an Indian language. There is no harbor associated with Keego Habor, but the community is set among the lake district of western Oakland County, an area renowned for its water recreation resources. notorious Purple Gang to spend their summers among the sparkling lakes.

After becoming a city in 1955, Keego Harbor today is a city of approximately 2,769 people, located along the shores of Cass Lake, the largest in Oakland County. The small, yet beautiful community has become one of Oakland Counties hidden gems, with a plethora of water recreation available to the residents, all within a short distance of their homes. It’s proximity to Orchard Lake and numerous other bodies of water make Keego Harbor an ideal spot for fishers, boaters, and swimmers.

As a part of Oakland County’s renowned educational system, Keego Harbor boasts of its own elementary school, Roosevelt Elementary. With low student-to-teacher ratios of just 15 students per teacher, Roosevelt provides the community's children with an excellent start in their education paths. Keego Harbor is a part of the prestigious West Bloomfield School District, which includes six National Exemplarly Schools and features a vast amount of technological tools, with other 2,500 personal computers and 400 laptops. Nearly every student goes onto college, with over 94% pursuing higher education. Living in Keego Harbor will assue your child’s education will be first class.

One of the biggest benefits of living in Keego Harbor is its great sense of community. The city often puts on events that attract residents of all ages to come together to mingle among each other. The Big Fish Festival is the city’s largest event, with a weekend of activities, from basketball, classic cars, keynote speakers, and dinner and dance in what has become the highlight of the summer for many residents. The city also puts on an  Annual Skate Night, where the entire city is invited to come out for a night of skating and other activities for the whole family.

As a part of Oakland County, Keego Harbor sits in one of the most entertaiment laden counties in the country. From the Palace of Auburn Hills, home to the Detroit Pistons and national headlining musicians, to the outdoor venues of the DTE Energy Music Theater, Freedom Hill, and Meadowbrook, the area features an almost constant stream of live music. Other events like the wildly popular Woodward Dream Cruise and the numerous art fairs held in the area that draw people from around the state. The area is also the home to numerous famed shopping areas, from the upscale Somerset Mall in Troy to the hip downtowns of Birmingham and Royal Oak.
