Geocache Description:

This should be an easy P&G. BYOP. Shorter geocachers will be challenged. Bring a tall buddy. Please don't push the cache container too far up or it will be EXTREMELY difficult for the next cacher to remove.

This cache site is located near the former Waumbek Hotel, one of the largest and finest resort hotels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Benjamin Plaisted built the hotel in 1860 at the suggestion of the Rev. Thomas Starr King, a Unitarian minister from Boston who traveled and hiked extensively in the White Mountains in the mid-1800s. King made his White Mountain headquarters in Jefferson, staying with Plaisted at Plaisted’s small farmhouse, known as the Red Tavern (located today at the intersection of Route 2 and Route 116). In his 1859 book, “The White Hills, their Legends, Landscape, and Poetry,“ King wrote he felt that Jefferson could benefit from a comfortable hotel because he thought the view from Jefferson Hill was the “ultima thule in grandeur” for at no other point in the White Mountains was the view as panoramic. “Ultima thule” in Latin means “the extreme limit of travel and discovery,” in other words “the ultimate scenic view,” according to King. The original Waumbek Hotel was located on the north side of Route 2 and just east of Starr King Road. At its height of popularity it could seat 600 in its dining room. The structure burned in May 1928.  Stop and enjoy the views of the Presidentials, Cherry Mountain, Lafayette Ridge and on a very clear day the Green Mountains of Vermont. Ducttaperocks and 1611sld hid this cache during our family Christmas vacation in Jefferson. 1611sld lives half the year in New Hampshire. There was about a foot of snow on the ground when we hid this, so it definitely should be a winter friendly cache.
