Geocache Description:

Cache hidden in an old cemetery.

Pearson Cemetery

Also known as “old Concord” and “Friends Cemetery”, Pearson Cemetery is located just north of State Route 571 on the East Side of Peters Pike in Monroe Township, Miami County. The cemetery sits behind the Monroe Grange. The many “Pearsons” who are buried there were prominent pillars in the community. I had heard that a number of those interred were children as a result of a cholera epidemic in the early-mid 1800’s, but although there are quite a few children buried here, further research does not show that most died during the epidemics of 1832-33 or 1848-49.

The earliest known burial that was recorded was Eliza Jenkins who died in 1822. There are a number of stones with no dates or unreadable dates. Therefore, we cannot assume that this is the actual earliest burial. There are quite a few Civil War veterans buried here (as evidenced by the GAR grave markers) and at least one War of 1812 veteran. One of the Civil War veterans fought for the Ohio 10th Volunteer Infantry. More information can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10th_Ohio_Infantry

Parking is behind the Grange building, with a short walk to the cemetery. Please replace the cache as you found it.
