Geocache Description:

The John Waterman Arnold House is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Warwick, built around 1785 by the Arnold family. This farmhouse was run for a time by Israel Arnold, who besides being a farmer was a prestigious sea captain. He married Mercy Waterman, the daughter of Revolutionary War hero Colonel John Waterman.

One of their children was John Waterman Arnold, who lived as a farmer, carpenter, and colonel in the Warwick Militia. He married Eliza Harris in 1825, and around that time an extension was built onto the house. Their daughter, Ann Eliza Arnold, was the last in the family to reside here until her death in 1906. She is buried nearby in WK #5 (in the center of Pawtuxet Memorial Cemetery) along with many other family members.

In 1972, the John Waterman Arnold House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It underwent major renovation throughout the 1980's and 90s and is now the location for the Warwick Historical Society. Inside, the house is furnished with period items, informative displays, and resources on city history. Inside, there is a central chimney with fireplaces throughout, although it has been deduced that the kitchen was in the basement, with access and living quarters for the servants in the back of the house. In the front, there is a simple but elegant winding staircase.

Outside the front door is a nicely kept garden with a nice birdbath, which is the location for this geocache. Access has been granted by the Warwick Historical Society, so feel free to enter through the garden gate to reach this spot. Please treat the area with respect. There is no need to move anything as the container is camouflaged but exposed. Please return it as found when you are done. There is also no need to venture onto cemetery grounds, which immediately abut the property.

If you wish to tour the inside of the house, it is open to the public during certain hours (typically Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11am-2pm). There is no entrance fee, although donations are accepted. Access is through the door on the extension in back (nearest the road). After entering, the museum is through the door down the entryway on the left. More information can be found at http://www.whsri.org or on the group's Facebook page. This is completely optional and is not a requirement for finding the geocache.
