The campsite is located beside the picturesque Waitewheta River. It provides access to a variety of short walks and overnight tramps featuring historic mining and logging remains amongst the regenerating bush, and of course geocaching.
The 37,000 ha Kaimai Mamaku forest park is a living museum of natural and human history.The park marks the northern limit of kamahi, red and silver beech,and the southern limit of the huge kauri. Birdlife includes the fantail, North Island Robin,kereru (native pigeon), waxeye or silver-eye, tui and tomtit.
The camp is located close to the Karangahake Gorge walkways (visit link) and the Waitewheta Tramway walk (visit link)

We are planning a group walk on SATURDAY and will put the details up here closer to the date. Please refer the "Announcement" in the logs section below for details
OR YOU CAN JUST COME ALONG FOR THE BBQ
The BBQ will be fired up starting at about 4:30pm. Please bring your food to grill, and a salad or side dish to share, along with plates, cutlery etc and something to sit on. Please note there is limited phone coverage in the valley
...AND STAY FOR THE CAMPING TOO
For those opting to stay on and join those of us camping overnight, we will be staying at the DoC campsite. The campsites are provided by DOC on a first-come-first-serve basis without a booking system and can fill up quickly, particularly if the weather is looking good.

How to get to the Dickey's DOC Camp
Leave SH2 at Waikino, via Waitawheta Road southbound over a one-lane bridge, then take Kennedy Road and Dickey Flat Rd. The final approach is unsealed road.
