Geocache Description:

This multi-cache features the little free library at the Twin Lakes recreation area on Wisconsin River Power Company land along the Petenwell Flowage. The cache container is located in the same area, and is a black-taped pill bottle positioned above water and snow levels. Twin Lakes is not really a boat landing, but the word sounded cool in the cache name...

Have you found a geocache at a Little Free Library? Do you have a Little Free Library in your neighborhood? Do you yourself own a Little Free Library? These structures have been popping up everywhere since the first one was created and placed in Hudson, Wisconsin, in 2009. You can find more information about this “take a book, return a book” program at the following link for Little Free Libraries.

We didn't know much about Little Free Libraries until we saw an article in our local paper about one being placed on public recreation land that sees a lot of visitors in the summer months. We have since found caches featuring Little Free Libraries, and that led us to check out the one nearby that we had read about. The LFL at Twin Lakes is easy to locate and is in a shady area with plenty of room to park. There are picnic tables and benches to sit on while enjoying the area, and it can be found off County Highway Z just south of the Wood-Adams County line. The LFL website lists Central Wisconsin Nature Foundation, Town of Rome, and Teen Leadership Project of South Wood County as groups initiating this effort.

In the winter, the library steward removes the books and covers the structure. The short drive and parking areas are seldom plowed, if ever, so if you choose to look for this cache in the off-season, be aware of what conditions you may encounter. The cache itself is findable in the winter, but because of proximity issues, it is NOT located at the Little Free Library structure. To determine the coordinates of the actual cache container, you will need to visit the LFL and observe which way it faces (where the door is). If the structure is covered with a tarp, you may have to peek under just a bit to determine this. The wading attribute is for high water levels of the flowage, but unless flood stage is approached (Do NOT search for this cache under those conditions!), you should only get your shoes a bit wet at these times.

Here are your choices for the final coordinates based on your observation of the position of the Little Free Library:

If you think the structure faces predominantly
  • northeast, go to N 44˚12.690' W 089˚53.383'
  • northwest, go to N 44˚12.669' W 089˚53.395'
  • southeast, go to N 44˚12.660' W 089˚53.371'
  • southwest, go to N 44˚12.652' W 089˚53.396'
