The Bendles was once one of main industrial area of Knottingley. Locally quarried limestone was unloaded at top end of the Bendles via steel chutes into barges waiting below for transportation across the county. Once road transportation took over from the canals the workings became redundant.
A few years ago the area was landscaped to make it more accessible, paths and viewing areas were created, and even a few picnic tables were added. A facsimile chute was put in place reminding us of it’s industrial past and this much forgotten part of Knottingley became a pleasant area in which to sit and take in the history of the location.
Unfortunately since then there has been a lack maintenance and the area is some what neglected, but it’s still worth a visit.
