Si vives en Puerto Rico, probablemente has visitado o al menos has escuchado hablar de los pueblos de Vega Alta, Vega Baja, Toa Alta, Toa Baja y Trujillo Alto; pero probablemente no de Trujillo Bajo. Durante el siglo 18 hubo al sureste de la actual Área Metropolitana, un gran hato ganadero que fue dividido en dos regiones con respecto al Río Cariabón, hoy Río Grande de Loíza. Los habitantes de la parte alta comenzaron gestiones para establecer un pueblo que se fundó en el 1801 con el nombre de Santa Cruz de Trujillo. El pueblo empezó a llamarse Trujillo Alto luego de que los pobladores de la parte baja lograron fundar en el 1817 su propio pueblo con el nombre de San Miguel de Trujillo Bajo. Con el pasar de los años se formó en el noreste de Trujillo Bajo otro poblado que en el 1857 se convirtió en pueblo con el nombre de San Fernando de la Carolina. Trujillo Bajo coexistó con Trujillo Alto y Carolina hasta el 1873, cuando incapaz de cumplir sus obligaciones económicas se declaró en quiebra. Las autoridades disolvieron el pueblo y pasaron todos sus barrios a Carolina. Hoy casi nada queda de Trujillo Bajo. Su casco urbano, sus calles y su iglesia desaparecieron. Sólo queda su nombre en uno que otro rótulo y su cementerio... donde yacen en sueño eterno los ciudadanos de un pueblo cuya memoria está por desaparecer.
Lo único que queda del antiguo poblado es el cementerio, cuyo única lápida del siglo 19 pertenece a Micaela Cruz, fallecida en 1897. El cementerio conserva el camino principal, aunque modificado, y partes del muro antiguo.

If you live in Puerto Rico, maybe you had visited or at least have heard of towns like Vega Baja, Vega Alta, Toa Alta, Toa Baja and Trujillo Alto; but maybe not of Trujillo Bajo. During the 18 century at the southeast of the actual Metropolitan Area there was a great cattle ranch that was divided into two regions with respect to the Cariabon River (Rio Cariabón), today Río Grande de Loíza. The residents started procedures to establish a new town who was founded with the name of Holy Cross of Trujillo (Santa Cruz de Trujillo) in 1801. Then the town was renamed Trujillo Alto after the settlers of the lower part were able to establish their own town with the name of San Miguel de Trujillo Bajo. As the years were passing in 1857 another town was formed at the northeastern of Trujillo Bajo with the name of San Fernando de la Carolina. Trujillo Bajo coexisted with Trujillo Alto and Carolina until 1873 when it could not continue any longer with its economical obligations and it was declared bankrupt. The authorities dissolved the town and all its districts were given to Carolina. Today almost nothing is left of Trujillo Bajo. Its urban shell, its streets and its church disappeared. The only thing left is its name in one or another road sign and its cemetery...where the citizens of a town lie in eternal dream whose memory is about to disappear.
The only thing left from the old cemetery is a grave from the 19 century that belongs to Micaela Cruz who died March 27, 1897. The cemetery conserves its primary foot path, though it has been modified and parts of the old wall.
