Geocache Description:

This cache, a reminder of the hey-day of scouting, its values and activities, takes you into a secluded, urban reserve in central New Plymouth. It is bigger than it first seems.

In the late sixties I attended an outdoor pop concert in this quiet, almost hidden, green reserve above Te Henui Stream. I only recently discovered that the land was donated in 1928 by Mrs Eliza Avery for use by the local scouts, in memory of her husband Thomas,a lifelong supporter of the Scouting Movement since it began in NZ in 1908. Mrs Avery continued to give her time and support to scouting for many years. Many troops have enjoyed camping and learning bushcraft skills on this property. There were also many plans for developing the site into a permanent scouting facility. An ablutions block was built and native trees planted to commemorate scouts killed in WW2. Working bees became a regular occurrence, with the troops meeting at 2p.m. on Saturdays. Scouting records show extensive and continuous use was made of the site, with its grassy spaces, bush, and stream. Highlights were the campfire singsongs, and theatrical performances, which left many memories!! However, the reserve, although ideally situated, had poor road access for significant construction work, and there was no co-ordinated or full-time management, so the facilities slowly fell into disrepair and the sounds of singing around camp fires disappeared.

The cache can be accessed from  Frank Wilson Tce or Timandra Street: both take you past the plaque. There is a walk downhill to the cache which is a small sistema 400 mls.
