Whether you realize it or not, the Kinzua Dam is a great place to spot our national symbol-The Bald Eagle. Particularly in winter time when most lakes and streams in the Northeastern U.S. freeze over, the outflow below the Kinzua Dam is always open water and the Eagle population increases dramatically as Eagles frequently fish the open waters. Check the photo gallery for a sample of what you might see during the event.
The event cache involves a meet and greet in the Big Bend Recreation Area adjacent to the Kinzua Dam. The Caching With Eagles event is being held on Saturday January 31st, 2015.
Geocachers will meet at the Big Bend Visitors Center located at the posted coordinates above to trade travel bugs, swap geo-stories, munch a few cookies, and maybe look for a new cache or two. You can also sign the event log if you desire.
If you are also interested in real bald eagles, there will be three spotting scopes set up for visitors to check out eagles in the vicinity of the dam and tail waters.
This will be a normal geo-event with the logbook, and travel bug exchange, available from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Hot chocolate and cookies will be available at the visitors center (while it lasts). So come out, see a few eagles, enjoy meeting up with some of your caching friends, and grab a cache or two. What else would you want to do on a cold Saturday in January anyway?
