Remount park.
This park is a memorial to the Australian Light Horse(ALH). The site of the park was once a remount depot for the ALH during WWI. The memorial avenue which leads to Light Horse Parade contains a series of plaques and traces the path followed by the Regiments during the campaigns of the First World War. The war started 04 August 1914 and ended 28 June 1919.
The Delta at the avenue symbolises the Nile Delta in Egypt where the active life of the ALH began. The texture and colour of the pathway is that of the desert over which the Lighthorseman fought. Along the route the vegetation represents that found in the places where the ALH campaigns occurred. Eucalypts along the avenue are those also found in Egypt where the troops awaited there intial orders. In the Parade Ground the sculpture "Last Farewell" captures the bond between the Lighthorseman and his mount.
The 'Battle of Beersheeba' is what the Lighthorseman and their steeds are greatly renown for. The capture of Beersheeba by Australian, New Zealand and British soldiers is seen as a turning point in the history of WWI. It was vital for Allied forces to capture the heavily fortified town on Gaza which was held by the Turkish and German forces. Two previous attacks had failed but the Australian Light Horse of the 4th and 12th Regiments armed only with bayonets charged the Turkish trenches, taking the town in less than hour and suffering 67 casualties.
31 October 2017 marks the 100th year anniversary of 'The Battle of Beersheeba'
We found this cache container inside the 'Under the Over' cache on the M7 bike track by Rainbow Spirit. We have hidden it with natural camo.
