Sandwich Harbor is a lagoon and sheltered bay overlooked by massive dunes of the Namib Desert to the east. The name comes from the first recorded ship to anchor here in 1790 – “Sandwich”. The area provided shelter from rough seas and fresh water ashore for those who operated in the area. From here developments included guano harvesting, whaling and fishing. A meat processing factory, accommodation and small trading station made up the basic settlement. Some of the remains of these buildings remain but are always at the mercy of the moving dunes.
Today the area is known for its exceptional sightseeing, birdlife, wildlife and fishing. Tour operators run guided tours into the area daily, providing deep knowledge and insight into the area – these tours are highly recommended.
The cache is hidden in one of the old building remains, safe from high tides and encroaching dune sand. Inside is a logbook, pencil and a travel bug.
