Geocache Description:

An easy cache in an out of the way place with an excellent view of the Delta County "Dobie Badlands."

Hard surfaced road except last 100 yds, very muddy sticky clay when wet

GC2RB7C - Lets Go Ride A Bike - was located here for several years with 31 finds and 3 DNFs.  Although the cache was 100's off of GZ it was still findable using geosense, but never well taken care of having been replaced several times by local geocachers trying to keep it alive, us being one of those. With the GZ being so far off and no one taking care of the cache description to correctly reflect the replacement container type, it was finally archived.  As the most recent container is ours and is still in place, we have decided to "Go Ride a Bike - AGAIN!" The "old" log with the last half dozen signatures has been left in place.

Numerous mugglers may be around loading & unloading "bikes" (especially on summer weekends) but if you act like you are "interested" in the local bulletin board and "take a few pictures" of the area, they will pay scant attention. "Bring your own bike" would be the BEST stealth!

The cache is out in the middle of the 'dobies in an area that the BLM has dedicated to the open use of all comers: ATV, 4x4, but mostly dirt bikes. There are no "marked" trails that you have to stay on. The BLM feels that by allowing this "open" area in the 'dobies will provide a way for dirt bikers to "get it out of their system" without tearing up other public lands that are more fragile.  The 'dobies are an excellent place to practice the sport providing the worst (and best!) of anything you would ever find in a motocross event.  At least one of Colorado's finest Pro motocross and supercross riders learned their craft on these dobies.  If you want to know who that rider was, you will have to read -The Awesome 'Dobie Badlands by Muriel Marshall - last chapter.

In that book you will learn that these gray clay soils make good Adobe brick (thus the term 'Dobie) and when fired with (the chemical composition of) local coal, provide the WHITE brick for which the area is famous (even exported to other states) and of which was constructed the white brick buildings you still see standing along main street in of most of the local towns.

You will also learn that these 'dobies were covered in grass "up to a horses belly" back in the 1880s when the area was first settled. Over-grazing of the fragile grasses depleted them and the ground mulch that they self provided to protect their root systems and retain moisture in the soil. Several attempts to re-establish these grasses have failed as they need copious amounts of water for a number of years until they are established and have accumulated the natural "mulch" they need to survive.

This fabulous place to "Go Ride a Bike - AGAIN!" is the result!
