Šmitovo jezero se sastoji od dva povezana jezera, Maloga i Velikoga. Voda u Malo jezero dotječe iz ponora Rupećice, kroz niz pukotina. Iz Maloga jezera, preko pličine, voda prelazi u Veliko jezero, gdje ponire. U jezeru i obližnjoj špilji Rupećici obitavaju endemske vrste: čovječja ribica (Proteus anguinus) i riba svjetlica (Telestes polylepis). Uz Šmitovo jezero vezuje se predaja koja govori o djevojci koju je sv. Juraj spasio od zmaja, a otisak kopita njegovoga konja sačuvan je na kamenu pokraj jezera.
Šmit's lake consists of two connected lakes: The Little Lake and The Big Lake. The Little Lake takes water from the Rupećica Cave, through a series of fissures. From the Little Lake, over the shallow ground, the water flows into the Big Lake and then dives underground. The lake and the nearby Rupećica Cave are home to two endemic species: the olm (Proteus anguinus) and the Croatian Dace (Telestes polylepis). Šmit's Lake is associated with the legend of a maiden whom St. George saved from a dragon. The imprint of the hoof of St. George's horse is found on a stone by the lake.
