Seek Your Quarry (A), Otago Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

U.N.C.L.E.: After a few logs commenting on gorse at GZ I thought I should do a maintenance check. I would never hide a cache in gorse but gorse can establish itself very quickly. Had done a maintenance check on this back in January and didn't recall gorse being an issue then. At GZ I was able to go straight to the cache without coming into contact with gorse but, to be fair, I knew where the cache was. If you were hunting around I can see it could be an issue. The gorse is, as expected, newly established and will only get bigger. With this mind, I pulled the cache out. Archived.

Geocache Description:

quarry (noun); a thing or person that is chased or sought.

Sounds like a geocache to me!

This is the first in a series of caches that will highlight quarries, current and past, around the greater Dunedin area. The hides are all straightforward and are small containers so BYOP. Please disregard the number in the log and/or container. This was for a final additional cache which has since been archived.

This is the Mt Kettle quarry. From the cache site you can't really see the workings but if you approach GZ from the south along the Old Mt Cargill Road the quarry is quite visible up on the hillside as you near the hide. This is still an active quarry operated by Fulton Hogan.

There is room to park at GZ but take care not to block access for trucks should you visit during working hours.

Random Quarry Fact - Did You Know? The stone used to build Stonehenge (around 2500BC) wasn't just lumps of rock found lying around. It was built from rock that was quarried for the purpose. It is now believed that the ancient quarry which produced the “Bluestones” – the inner circle of Stonehenge – was situated a staggering 240 miles away. The quarry equipment used and the transportation method still remain unclear.
