周防国衙跡は、周防国の行政を司る役所（国府）が置かれたところです。
現在、政庁があったと推定されている場所は史跡公園として整備されています。
＊国衙とは、古代律令国家が諸国に置いた役所のこと。
律令制の衰退に伴い姿を消していったが、鎌倉時代初期に東大寺再建の造営料国となった周防国の国衙は、 現在まで遺構が残されてきた稀有な例です。
広大な跡地は国史跡に指定され、その一角には石碑が立っています。
