Geocache Description:

This series highlight many of the old farm ponds that exist at LBL. They are off the beaten path and require some cross-country walking. You will be looking for a plastic jar container with a log and a pen.

Hillman Ferry Pond #40Heads Up Possible Hint

LBL's Hillman Ferry Pond #40                                            Heads(tone) Up - Possible Hint

The two main fishing areas at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area are the impoundments of Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake.  Several other impoundments,  Hematite Lake, Bards Lake, Honker Lake, Energy Lake and Duncan Lake  also serve as fishing spots.  But these are the only places were fish occurred over the years.  There are over 200 small ponds listed in the LBL inventory.  Some of these are abandoned farm ponds. some are watering holes established for the wildlife. Some have dried up or become filled with sediments and detritus.  However, it  you look closely on the old maps or Google Earth, you may spy some of these hidden from view.  The next time you are at LBL and come cross one of these, add them to the series.

There are two ways to get to the trail: via the Hillman Ferry Bike Trails or via the North-South Trail.  By way of Hillman Ferry you have less than a half mile hike to and from. I have provided parking coordinates and the turn-off point from the North-South Trail because the Hillman Ferry Campground is closed from December 1st to March 1st. This route will be a gentle half mile hike to and back from the GZ.
