Geocache Description:

A Gang of horse thieves and whiskey peddlers operating in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), its members included Dave Smith, a former member of the Belle Starr Gang; his brother-in-law, Leander "Lee" Dixon; and a man teenager of about 17 years-old named William "Billy" Towerly.

I just received this update which I am adding. "Regarding GC5M7H8: {1} – Smith Dixon Gang. Leander Dixon was my Great great uncle. My cousin researched the incident going so far as to get all the handwritten court records. As she told it Leander was not a member of the gang but had set up a meeting at a logging camp in Oklahoma territory with his sister and brother-in-law. He was trying to get her to leave her outlaw husband. My great aunt Belle Dixon whom I grew up visiting ever summer all through my childhood) was 4 years old when it happened. She recalled her aunt bursting through the door with the bad news, her clothes had bullit holes in them and her sister in law Leanders wife had been killed by Marshal Frank Dalton when he and another deputy rode up and fired blindly into the tent without knowing who all was in there. Leander was taken to the Jail in Ft Smith where he died of illness. All depositions of witnesses family and onlookers corroborated story that Leander did not fire the fatal shot. The family has been trying to clear his name since."
