Geocache Description:

Church Micro 7246...Somersham

A 0.5L 'clik lock' container, full of swaps ... placed in the church grounds with the kind permission of the Reverend Sue Simpson. This cache is NOT hidden under a headstone.

The Church is open during daylight hours, and visitors are welcome. There is free parking next to the church and behind the Doctor's Surgery (Follow the 'P' sign).

The Parish Church of St. John the Baptist is the largest of the churches in the Benefice of Somersham, Woodhurst, Pidley-Cum-Fenton and Old Hurst). Situated in Church Street, in the heart of the village of Somersham, the church stands on a site which in all probability has been consecrated for Christian worship since the second half of the seventh century. The current building though dates from the period between 1250 and 1300 and is likely to have been built and paid-for by one of the bishops living in the (now disappeared) Bishops Palace which was sited only a few hundred yards from where the church now stands.

**Somersham War Memorial**

                1914-18

The memorial is a stained glass window above the altar in St John the Baptist Parish Church, Somersham. The window consists of slender early English lancets. The central figure of Christ with warriors of the new dispensation (St George, St Alban and St Martin) on one side and of the old dispensation (King David, Gideon and Joshua) on the other; also archangels Michael and Gabriel. There are 44 names listed for World War 1. The memorial was unveiled by local dignitaries and dedicated by the Bishop of Ely in 1922; the artist was Thomas Figgus Curtis. (thanks to roll-of-honour.com for this information, they freely give details of all the soldiers killed in WW1,,, but ask for acknowledgement because of their hard work).

The Reverend Sue Simpson has been geocaching in the past, and has kindly given permission for the cache to be placed on the church grounds. Please say hello if you see her yes
