It was mid-morning and everything was packed, a glorious Canberra day and the river was calling. Nothing beats days like this! The freshness in the air, and all was set. Snags, googs, tub of sliced onions and... well, pretty much everything you need for a bbq - including good authentic Aussie tomato sauce - no ketchup will ever make it onto MY sausage sanga!
Togs, towel, stereo & an Esky loaded with coldies - all in the car, ready to shoot down to the Murrumbidgee before the crowd gets there. The crew all arrive at the chosen place and time, and we lay claim on the prime position - open shade with great access to the river. A cricket pitch is plotted, and a game breaks out. The beers are going down a treat, and someone thinks to crank the bbq. Soon that glorious essence is drifting across the masses... much like a Saturday down at the local mega-store. Mmmmmm, snags 'n onion - all that is great about Australia. Oh the smell, the taste - the feeling of hunger being stopped in its tracks. Everyone gets their fill, going back for seconds (several times). Too full to move, too relaxed to care, and accompanied by a perfect summer's day in Tuggeranong - life couldn't get any better.
A faint hum is heard in the distance… slowly getting louder. Odd, the birds have quietened - they all seem to have stopped, listening to the increasing hum. As it grows louder the hum begins to sound like a buzz - a really, really loud buzz! From across the river they came, and before we know it we've been surrounded by thousands upon thousands of bees! They're everywhere, in the trees, on the cricket pitch, all through the bbq - they are simply everywhere! It's a swarm, a massive swarm - and most importantly - they're settling on the eski!
That's it, this is a catastrophe! Not only has our access to the river been blocked - the Esky has been hijacked. We can't swim, we can't hydrate - it's a tragedy! We could try smoking them out, but it's early in the day, and no-one reckons that's a good idea. Only one thing for it: we need a bee collector - a swarm tamer - a professional bee swarm collector! Someone look it up - there's gotta be a collector who specialises in Murrum... bees!
