Geocache Description:

Our Part of the World #1 This is the first cache we have created and hope you enjoy it as much as we have putting it together for fellow "cachers".

"Chinaman's Lagoon" is a former water reserve in the township is Teesdale.

The site is referred to locally as Chinaman's Lagoon, this name refers the involvement of Chinese migrants who settled in the township following the gold rushes that occurred during the late 1850s.

Teesdale water supply originally was extracted from the Native Hut Creek, an upper tributary of the Lower Barwon River. But by the 1870s, the water was considered too salty for human consumption. This realisation caused the need to establish a permanent and reliable water source for the emerging township. In 1878, a 19 acre site was proclaimed for use as a water reserve. A 150 metre tunnel was constructed to connect the reserve to a standpipe situated near the Town Hall.

By 1973 the township was connected to water from the Meredith basin and the reserve was no longer used as a catchment area.

In 1999 a local committee was appointed to manage the reserve which consists of an earthen dam dating from the era when it was used. A pathway and bird hide has been added to enjoy the variety of birds that gather to wade and feed on the nuts and flowers of native trees including Red River and Manna Gums.

This lovely area is a favourite spot for locals to go bird watching or just to enjoy a stroll amongst the trees,

Unfortunately due to the drought conditions of late most of the water has dried up, but you can still enjoy sitting in the hide and listening to the local kookaburras laugh and enjoy the Superb Blue Fairy Wrens hopping about feeding on insects.

Hopefully the water returns in the not to distant future and the sound of the "Booble Bonk" frogs return along with the water birds and Cockatoos who are frequent visitors to this hidden treasure.

Congratulations to Buzzsmc on capturing TFTF
