Geocache Description:

I drive all over the country for my job and I always enjoy seeing old castles as I go. I stopped here years ago and a local told me this is call Rattin Castle but that was all I could find out about it at the time. My sat-nav was spelling the townland as Rattan. It is a tower-keep in reality. Unfortunately there is no access to it but you can have a good look at it from the road. There is parking for one car at the gate right by the cache.

This is a park and grab but take the time to look at the castle. It was constructed in the 16th century as a defensive tower-house for the Anglo-Norman lands in this area. It is built on land once owned by Hugh De Lacy who in turned passed it to John D'Arcy. The D'Arcys had this family castle built and it remained in their possession until a descendant, Nicholas, forfeited it during the 1641 insurrection. The castle was in a ruinous state by the 18th century. You are looking for a camouflaged tube. There is no room for swaps. BYOP. Watch out for the barbed wire.

Congratualtions to TucKids on the FTF.
