A lovely round trip from the Hydro or the main car park on the Edinburgh Road in Peebles.

This is a round trip walk that we enjoy in either direction, there are great views and good paths and the full circuit is approximately 6 miles long. You can start and finish at the main car park in Peebles or from the Hydro. Walking clockwise heading up past Castle Venlaw is the steeper climb, anticlockwise heading up the Soonhope Glen from the Hydro is the more gentle climb but has a steeper descent. Look out for the Soonhope Sleeper at the bottom of the glen. The clockwise route follows the Tweed Trails Venlaw Circular path, passing the Venlaw Community Woodland and Castle Venlaw Hotel. The path rises and then levels off a number of times as it climbs Venlaw hill – the path opens to give views of the surrounding countryside, and also of Peebles in the valley down below. The path levels out before it begins the gradually descend, following forestry tracks through mature plantations to reach the mid-point of the walk at Shieldgreen. The return leg of the walk heads Soonhope Glen, passing a small community of holiday ‘huts’. The walk joins the Tweed riverside path and on to Peebles Hydro hotel. Walk up the hotel drive and follow the track up the right hand side of the building past the swimming pool, then pick up the track that contours left round Venlaw hill and back to the starting point in Peebles town centre, where there are several cafes and pubs for refreshments.
