According to tradition, in the past, people used to hunt and salt wild boards. From this comes the name of this place, Salga, meaning salting. Salta is one of the inhabited places of higher altitude of the island of São Miguel, it´s common quite strong winds, which makes it be known as the "Land of the winds".
The opening of the Salto do Cavalo road, one of the few in the eastern part of the island that connects the South coast to the North coast, gave a new impulse to this small village.
