In 1963 Ingrid Jonker's poem "The Child who was shot dead by soldiers at Nyanga" was published.
Two years later at the age of 31 she took her own life by walking into the sea at Gordon's Bay and drowned.
Today this monument was plased here at the place where its believed she walked into the sea and never returned.
