Geocache Description:

Welcome to Stuart, IA


Stuart, IA is located in Adair County and in Guthrie Country. With the building of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad through the area in the late 1860s is when Stuart had its start. Named for Charles Stuart, who had a hand in bringing the railroad to the area.


As of the 2010 census, 1648 people live in Stuart IA covering 2.58 square miles. Notable people from Stuart, IA include:

  • Osborn Deignan who received the Medal of Honor in the Spanish-American War
  • Buck Shaw who was the first football head coach at the US Air Force Academy, the Philadelphia Eagles head coach, and the only coach to have beaten Vince Lombardi in the playoffs
  • Williams R. Peers - A US Army Lieutenant General who was best known for the Peers Commission investigation of the My Lai Massacre and for service with Detachment 101.
