Geocache Description:

A pleasant short walk of about 4 miles up St. Marys Vale on the lower south east slopes of the well-known Sugar Loaf mountain just outside of Abergavenny, taking in half a dozen caches.

The Walk

With generally decent footpaths but not particularly often walked, apart from by locals, St. Marys Vale offers a different side to the well known Sugar Loaf mountain, with its moss-covered oaks and beech woodlands, pretty stream running through, and some open mountain valley at the far end. There are also fabulous views of both the top of Sugar Loaf, the Blorenge and down the vale itself from Cwm Trosnant (waypointed).

Designed as a walk accessible to most people, with generally well defined paths (an OS 1:25000 map is desirable though) there is a some height gain on this short walk but it is never steep and you'll only gain about 100 metres or so. It is a mountain environment though so decent footwear is advisable as is clothing that can protect you should the weather change. Terrain underfoot is generally pretty good but of course it can get a little muddy after rain (and the beech leaves can 'drift' in certain places in autumn and winter up to knee depth at the sides of some paths which the children had great fun playing in! smiley As did I!! wink)

This walk would also be ideal for visitors to the area, for those short of time and for those who don't feel they are up to (or want to) take on a 'proper' mountain walk.

Hope you enjoy it, and the caches.

The Caches

There are 5 traditional caches of various sizes to suit all tastes on the route and a final bonus. I was going to do 6 traditional caches but did not want the last one to be done as a cache and dash as it would be a dangerous place to pull over so changed number 6 to a bonus with the clues for it being in caches 1 and 3.

This is a reasonably well disguised small micro and does not have one of the clues for the bonus in it. Pen needed.

The Next Step

From this cache continue along the obvious path to meet the path marked on the map. Turn left and follow this all the way to Cwm Trosnant and cache number 3.

Thanks to the National Trust for their kind permission to place this cache.
