Geocache Description:

E. A. Nelson Motor Car Co. Detroit, MI 1917-1922

Production started with a few Nelson Roadster in 1918 and 1918. Closed car models were made but Touring Cars were there best seller. Only about 400 cars were made from 1917 to 1922.

The Nelson Touring Car was designed along European lines by E. A. Nelson. Nelson formerly served with Oldsmobile, Packard and Hupmobile. The Nelson automobile was produced in small numbers and not well known to the general public. However, it was quite well established in the engineering field. It was a light weight car with high speed and low fuel consumption. Stock models got 25 miles a gallon in part due to the four cylinder overhead valve engine.

The four cylinder overhead valve engine had a disc clutch and a three speed transmission incorporated with the axle. The engine construction was unique. The four cylinder and upper crankcase are integral and head is detachable. The head carried the valves, intake and exhaust passages. Also mounted on the head was the magneto, auxiliary oil tank and fan pulley. The camshaft was located on top pf the cylinders, driven by bevel gears from the crankshaft. The cams act directly on the valves without the use of push rods. No flywheel was used, this being replaced by the motor generator of the U.S.L. starting and lighting system.

The wheelbase of the Nelson was 104 inches which was about the right size for a light car. Wheels and tire size was 32 inches X 4 inches. The ignition was produced by Bosch Magneto. Price of a 1922 Nelson shown above was about $1,500.00.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has given the Belle Isle Cachers exclusive permission to place all geocaches on Belle Isle State Park. Please be respectful to the park, its management and all other visitors during your time here.

This park is very busy year round, please use extreme stealth at all times as every area is being used by others. Rock hides give great views around the island, we have marked the cache location to help with your finds so please replace just as you found them.
