Not many states can say that they have claim to a national holiday, but Anna Jarvis put West Virginia (and the town of Grafton) on the map. On May 12, 1907, Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother and thus began her journey to create an official day to honor mothers. After years of campaigning, in 1914 President Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, making Jarvis’ efforts a nationally recognized holiday. Paying tribute to Jarvis’ efforts, the town of Grafton has since restored the Anna Jarvis Birthplace (a historic museum) and built the Mother’s Day Shrine in the middle of town.
