Standing as a silent monument to what once was. Until 4 years ago, this spot was covered with willows, poplars and birchs. there was an abundance of flowers, deer, coyotes, ground squirrels, bats and birds. We regularly saw owls, hawks, red wing blackbirds, sparrows, swallows, ducks, geese, grouse and other birds making this area home. There were ponds and trials, and people regularly met and chatted while thier dogs played in the long grass.
This tree sat on a rise above a pond - which is now under the northbound ramp to Deerfoot Trail. To the East, under the southbound ramp was another pond surrounded by trees, and home to a family of Great Horned Owls for more than 7 years. We have never figured out why the crews left this tree, but we are glad they did.
My daughter wanted to place a cache out here, she is too young to remember the way it was, but thought the tree looked lonely, so we stocked this one with kid-friendly items like mini flashing lights, plastic animals and the like. You will know it when you see it.
I have indicated a safe place to park - the side of the highway is not advisable!
