Ancora oggi, come in passato, il nucleo storico della città è diviso in due: "Villanuova" aggrappata alla collina e il "borgo" che si estende ai suoi piedi. Col tempo il borgo si è ampliato ed espanso lungo il torrente fino a diventare un moderno centro enologico.
La collina di Villanuova ha conservato intatta l'impronta urbanistica medievale; infatti è ancora leggibile, nell'assetto viario del rione, l'andamento ellittico della cortina muraria primitiva, mentre gli importanti edifici fortificati sono stati quasi completamente distrutti nel corso delle varie guerre. Sulla cima della collina è situato ancora oggi il castello.
