Operation Damala was the name of the Police investigation into the double murder of two Asian women. On 1 March 2004 the bodies of two Asian escort workers were found floating in the Adelaide river near the Arnhem highway bridge. Both women had their hands and feet bound and car batteries attached by cable ties to their ankles. On 19 March 2005 two tennagers were convicted of murder and sentenced to two consecutive sentences of life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 25 years.
The Adelaide River starts in Litchfield National Park and flows generally northwards to Clarence Strait, being crossed by both the Stuart Highway (at the township of Adelaide River) and the Arnhem Highway (near Humpty Doo). The Adelaide River is well known for its high concentration of saltwater crocodiles.
