Warning: on Weekends, specially in winter, the place can be crowded. It's better to visit on weekdays.
This is an easy straightforward cache, which its sole goal is to show you this interesting and lovely little spot: Assaf Siboni Lookout.
Assaf Siboni, A member of the near by kibbutz Nir Am, died in the 1997 helicopter accident, when he was 20 years old, along with 72 soldiers. A statue consisted from 20 wind chimes, one for each year of Assaf's life, was erected on this hill (do not touch them, please). The wind slowly moving the chimes, playing soft and soothing sounds, echoing in the open air – It's playing the story of Assaf, and the hope of his family for peace and coexistence.
Although the place looks so peaceful and quiet, it not always is. To the west you can see the Palestinian Gaza Strip, and the Israeli village Netiv HaAsara, with the border wall separating between them. So close, so far away.
It is best to visit here in January-March, when the scenery is green and blooming. Around February the area is filled with lots of red Anemones (and traveling muggles!) and when they're gone many other colorful wild flowers fill their absence. Among them you can see, if you'll search closely, 2 types of small orchids (Ophrys), one of them was found by us 15 centimeters from the cache hiding place. Water birds can also be seen to the north, in the water reservoir.
Come here in the blooming season with a picnic basket, on a sunny winter weekday (as weekends are too crowded to enjoy). Sit in front of the view, listen to the music of the wind and enjoy the quietness.
Directions: Drive to the entrance to Nir Am, and before the gate turn left to the dirt road (suitable to all cars), and follow the signs to the lookout.

אסף נהרג באסון המסוקים בשאר יישוב ב-1997, והוא בן 20 שנה. הוא היה בן היישוב הסמוך ניר עם, ובילה שעות רבות ברעיית עדר הבקר עם סבו בשטחים הירוקים הנשקפים מהמצפור. לזכרו נבנה במקום פסל הכולל 20 חלילי רוח, כמספר שנות חייו. אנא אל תגעו בהם. תנו לרוח לנגן בהם לבדה את המוזיקה המרגיעה והרכה המסמלת את סיפור חייו - צלילים שמסמלים עבור משפחתו את הכמיהה והתקווה לשלום ודו קיום בישראל.
זהו מקום שליו להפליא בדרך כלל, אך הוא אינו תמיד כך. בכיוון מערב נפרשת תצפית מעניינת על רצועת עזה הקרובה כל כך, ומאפשרת לכם להתרשם מגודלה וקרבתה של העיר, כשגדר הגבול חוצצת בינה לבין השכן הצמוד ממש, מושב נתיב העשרה.
כדאי להגיע לכאן בחורף, כשהפריחה משתוללת וכל האזור ירוק ומכוסה פרחים. בתקופת סוף ינואר עד פברואר מתקיים באזור פסטיבל דרום אדום לרגל פריחתן של אינספור כלניות בצבע אדום, וכשהן נעלמות הן מתחלפות בשלל פרחי בר מעניינים הצובעים את המצפור: אירוס צהרון, נוריות, רותם, הרדופנין הציצית ועוד, כולל שני סוגי סחלבים קטנים (דבורניות) אם תחפשו היטב. אנו מצאנו את דבורנית הקטיפה (תמונה עליונה משמאל) ממש בצמוד למקום המחבוא – מציאה כפולה!
מומלץ לבקר במקום ביום חול, כשהמקום שקט, עם סל פיקניק. שבו, הביטו בנוף היפה, הקשיבו למוזיקת הרוח ותיהנו מהשקט.
