Geocache Description:

#47 From the series ' Chapels in Lesvos '


With really stunning view, the chapel is built on top of a cave which is inaccessible without special tools and knowledge .
The cave has about 60 meters of corridors and is the third in size of Lesvos caves. It is confirmed that was in use from even early "Stone Age" era and related stone tools are exhibited at the Archeological Museum of Mytilene together with the Prehistoric Village of Thermi findings.
Some ceramic pot pieces found and dictate the continuous use of the cave as a refuge at every era, icluding late Byzantine or Turkish occupation period.

Το πολύ παλιό εξωκλήσι του Αγίου Βαρθολομαίου είναι χτισμένο πάνω από το τρίτο σε μέγεθος σπήλαιο της Λέσβου.
Το σπήλαιο του Αγίου Βαρθολομαίου δέν είναι εύκολα προσβάσιμο και απαιτεί ειδικά εργαλεία και ανάλογες γνώσεις γιά να το επισκευτεί κανείς. Έχει μήκος 60 μέτρων και βρέθηκαν εργαλεία και αντικείμενα που μαρτυρούν την συνεχή κατοίκησή του από την νεολιθική εποχή και εντεύθεν. Τα ευρήματα εχουν μεταφερθεί στο Αρχαιολογικο μουσείο της Μυτιλήνης και εκτίθενται στην ίδια αίθουσα με τα ευρήματα της "Θερμής", Prehistoric Village of Thermi που ανήκει στην ίδια περίοδο.
Τμήματα πήλινων αντκειμένων που ανακαλύφθηκαν στον ίδιο χώρο, μαρτυρούν την χρήση του σπηλαίου σαν χώρο κατοικίας η καταφυγίου μέχρι και τα χρόνια της Τουρκοκρατίας, αδιάλειπτα.
