Geocache Description:

Enjoy a walk up toward Scallastle River within this Forestry Commission Scotland woodland site.

Scallastle gives lovely views looking back over the Sound of Mull from up above Craignure. Parking is available at the road entrance, you'll then follow a well marked footpath uphill. Keep your eyes peeled for Mull wildlife; this area is great for golden eagles and white-tailed eagles - keep check on the mountain ridgeline up above you for these birds. Also smaller woodland birds will be seen including crossbill, long-tailed tits and coal tits. Excitingly, Mull is now home to pine martens. We think they arrived in Craignure accidentally and now they're making use of the woodland in Scallastle, look out for their poo or scat - this will be about 2 inches in length and tends to be dark in colour, it is often right in the middle of a footpath! They're secretive animals and not normally out through the daytime, but you never know.

Take a break at the picnic table and enjoy some of the native tree species, like oak, birch and hazel. These trees support a huge range of species and Mull has some very important, rare species of lichen and mosses. You can carry on further up and round the track to find another geocache, and for amazing mountainous views.
