Tar
Finns have through history been producers of tar. Big areas of woods have been burnt to produce tar. While being a part of the Swedish kingdom Finns produced great amounts of tar for export. Tar export ended in the early 20th century, but Finns still love their tar. This fine ingredient can be found in all kinds of products from paint to shampoo and cosmetics to candy.
Tervaleijona is one of Finlands most beloved candy and it taste like…well, tar! Tar has been used as medicine, especially for skin related troubles. In Finland there is a saying that “If sauna, vodka or tar won’t help, then the decease is fatal”.
