Pismo Beach was a famous place to come to dig for the tasty (or so I'm told) Pismo Clams and old photos show the beach crowded with clammers. However, the shell fisheries has collapsed. Some blame the humans but likely from the sea otters which moved into the area--the collapse came right after the rebound of the otters and their extending ther range. The otters are very efficient at harvesting the clams. Now the Pismo Clam is not extinct as the clams can still reproduce when still small--too small for the legal shell fisheries.
