Birmingham & Fazeley Canal: Gravel Pit Bridge
Gravel Pit Bridge is the only feature along a very long straight reach of canal. It is a Bailey Bridge that carries a gravel pit haul road over the canal. The Heart of England Way uses the towpath here. It is unfortunately not wheelchair friendly as the towpath can get very muddy. Care should always be taken by deep water, please supervise your geokids and geopets. Please replace as found.
The Birmingham & Fazeley Canal is managed by the canal and river trust, it was completed in 1789 to connect Birmingham to the Coventry and Oxford Canals and generated a great deal of freight traffic to and from Birmingham. It is also used daily by fishermen, narrow boaters, cyclists, walkers and many others enjoying what the canal has to offer. The canal is thriving with wildlife. There's fish, rabbits, foxes, badgers and an abundance of birds. Whilst placing these caches i was lucky enough to spot two kingfishers. This stretch of the canal is also very close to Kingsbury waterpark nature reserve and the RSPB's Middleton Lakes.
