Geocache Description:

Finnish activities # 17

20% of the population in Upplands Väsby is Swedenfinnish. This means they are Finns living in Sweden. This series of caches introduce you to Finnish activities, some more crazy than others!

It´s all about the hay

Collecting hay from the fields in the summertime has in Finland been a real happening. Hay harvesting even has its own month. July is called heinäkuu, which means hay month. Until the revolution with combine harvesters in 1980 everything was done by hand. All family, friends and relatives would gather to cut the hay and place it on a about 2-2,5 meters high stick to dry. After this the hay would be kept in a barn, located in the middle of the field. Still today you can see these barns when driving through Finland. The tradition of drying hay on sticks is still being kept alive and sometimes you can see them on the fields.
