Recently there has been a lot of talku- including a national bestseller and a new cable television showl- about the spy ring General George Washington used during the Revolutionary War. Based out of New York City, six people collected information from Loyalists, British soldiers, sailors, and commanders in the British controlled Long Island and Manhattan area. These six people have been dubbed Washington's Secret Six as they were instrumental in helping the colonies defeat the British. The secret six directly thwarted Benedict Arnold's efforts to turn over West Point to Britain and gave the British Navy's secret codes to the French navy, which helped lead to the British surrender at Yorktown. The six spies were Abraham Woodhull, Robert Townsend, Caleb Brewster, Austin Roe, James Rivington, and an as of yet unnamed person called Agent 355. This last Agent 355 is thought to be a woman of considerable means who interacted with the British commanders that resided and "partied"in the area.
After the American spy Nathan Halep- he of the "I only regret I have but one life to give for my country" famee- was hanged by the British for spying, the group used many tactics to keep their identities and information secret. A secret invisible writing ink kept all correspondence hidden - many times the spy ring's messengers were searched but the British never knew the secret messages were hidden there in plain sight. Any paper with the initials S.T. or L.T. written in the corner indicated a message was hidden on the parchment. The group also developed and used their own secret code to protect their identities and important information even if their ink was discovered.
