Geocache Description:

The building is largely abandoned with few stores along a renovated pedestrian corridor inside, Central Escalator Link Alley Shopping Arcade (中環購物廊). One side of the corridor has temporarily been redecorated on the theme of Central Oasis (城中綠州), pending further development.

History

The Central Market traces its origins to the Canton Bazaar built for the earliest Chinese settlement in the neighbourhood. For a long period in Hong Kong's history, the Central Market was where East met West and where Old met New.

The Antiquities Advisory Board gave the Central Market a Grade III status in 1990. In 1994, part of the Central Market was converted to the Central Escalator Link Alley Shopping Arcade which is the starting point of the Mid-levels escalator system. The Central Market ceased operation in March 2003.

The Government once considered selling the land plot for commercial use. However, with society's request for a public recreational space in Central, the Government decided to revitalize Central Market as a cultural space for the general public. With the theme of "Central Oasis", the Urban Renewal Authority aims to introduce more greenery into Central and provide a better amenity space for the public.
