This event features the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History’s Department of Paleobiology and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. See the other geocaches that are also part of the Smithsonian Natural History GeoTour.

Time: 12:00 noon

Dr. Spencer Lucas curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science has been working across New Mexico for many years on the fossil fauna and the geology of the state to gain a better understanding of the distribution of and the paleoecology of New Mexico in the late Paleozoic.
Dr. William DiMichele, curator of Paleozoic Paleobotany at the National Museum of Natural History and Dan Chaney, Museum Specialist and NMNH have been working on projects across the United States to understand the distribution of plant communities during the Late Paleozoic transition from a Glacial period (cold house) to a non-glacial period (hot house) similar in scale that the Earth is undergoing from the Pleistocene into the Holocene.

Please join us for a discussion, which will be wheelchair accessible, followed by a short hike through rocks of this age to understand how we approach these subjects and what role Horse Ridge plays in the larger picture.
