The Reverend Johann Friedrich Heinrich Wohlers was a German missionary who came to New Zealand in 1843, and to Ruapuke Island in 1844 on board the Deborah. At that point in time, Ruapuke Island had the largest Maori population in southern NZ, but were living in squalor like conditions. Rev Wohlers set about converting them to Christianity, improving their social lives to improve their outlook. He also introduced agriculture. After travelling to Wellington he returned with his new wife, widow Elsie Palmer, who set about teaching the Maori girls housework and how to care for sick whanau. A school was set up in 1868, and two years later, after the teacher resigned, it was agreed that Rev Wohlers would take over. In time as the remaining population on Ruapuke Island dwindled, Rev & Mrs Wohlers moved to Stewart Island, where he died in 1855 after 40 years service as a missionary to the Stewart Island. Just past GZ you will find a memorial in honour of Rev and Mrs Wohlers. The cache is a 600 ml screw top plastic jar with logbook only. Bring your own pen.
