Geocache Description:

Another easy cache with ample parking and a nice view of the Somass River.

If you hear the Tsunami Warning Speakers and it is not the first Wednesday of the month at 1:00pm,- shut up and listen.  Then head for the hills - fast!

You will be facing the Somass River as you walk toward the cache site. This waterway, at this point, is very tidal as this water is rushing to the mighty Pacific Ocean.  At low tide this river may look like a very little river and almost unimpresive.  At high tide you realize the greatness and the power this body of water can and does have.

The river has a drainage basin of 1412 square kilometers (or 545 square miles) including both Sproat Lake and Great Central Lake. The latter being home to Robertson Creek Hatchery where they release thousands of salmon fry yearly to swim right past this spot after travelling over the Stamp River Falls.  On average of four years later those same fish will be swimming back home to spawn making this a destination for fisherman every fall.  We aren't the Salmon Capital of Canada without good reason. Fly fishing is also enjoyed, especailly farther upstream in the Stamp River.  Yes, you are standing in front of the river widly aclaimed to have the largest salmon run in BC.

Looking to your right you will see Clutesi Marina and between 'here and there' is Victoria Quay (Key) where you an stroll on the boardwalk and enjoy the river and especailly the summer and fall sunsets. From this location and Victoria Quay in the fall you may enjoy bear watching - especailly at low tide.  Black bears frequent the area across the river fo feed on the bodies of the salmon who have spawned and then died.

Looking to your left, as the river flows past you, is the Paper Mill.  This mill has sent paper to many places all over the world including to the States (LA Times, Rolling Stones magazine, etc), to many countries in Europe, and the Orient.  Many Asian phone books are printed on specaility paper made right here! The river continues on past Alberni Harbour Quay (there is that Key word again)  with more shops and eateries. Over there you can see wind surfers playing in the afternoon breeze as the water, now blended with salt water heads more than 42Km (25 miles) out to the Pacific Ocean at Bamfield and Ucluelet.

Well, see all the things you can learn when you are looking for a little container left behind just for by someone you probably don't even know.

Why this long cache page, you wonder.... because I think 'something' on the cache page to read is MUCH better than 'almost nothing' and much, much better than some of the blank pages that are showing up these days.

Now - go find the cache.  Remember to sign the log so the find counts for you and we are sure you will also get another happy face to add to your lsit of finds.
