Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series of easy-to-find caches along the beautiful Warhill Sports Complex multi-use trail commemorating those who influenced the English settlement of James City County, and by extension, the United States. The trail is 3.5 miles long, but has many exit and entrance locations, which you can find here.

While the Virginia Company of London was preparing for colonization, another power was steadily gaining strength. When the first English ship made landfall at Jamestown, they entered a powerful king's realm. Wahunsenacawh, whom the British would later call "Chief Powhatan," ruled the land from Richmond to the Chesapeake, from the Rappahanock to the Dismal Swamp. We don't know when Wahunsenacawh was born or when he assumed leadership of the Powhatans, Algonquian Indians in Virginia. We do know that when he came to be Chief over his people, he inherited six chiefdoms from his predecessor. By the time the British arrived, he ruled over thirty chiefdoms. Historians reckon his people to have numbered somewhere between 12,000 and 25,000. We also know this about Chief Powhatan. He stayed his hand when he could have taken the lives of the English. In fact, he gave them food, helping them survive the toughest hardships. For better of for worse for his people, Wahunsenacawh helped the British colony survive its first couple harsh years.

There's a clue for GC5WHK9 in this cache.

Because the trail is set in a wildlife conservation area, please take special care to not disturb the vegetation (or the wildlife!). The caches are set up to be easy for you to find. If your coordinates indicate that a cache is in a tree, please check the foot of the tree first, then along the trunk. Caches will never be out along the branches or in shrubs or bushes. If it takes more than a minute or two to find the cache, please check the hint. The trail is open from 7 am until sunset.

Thanks to James City County for keeping up such a beautiful trail and letting us cache here!
